Doors open at 3:30pm, screening at 4PM.
Join Director Trista Suke and members of the CANAAF Ottawa & Area Support Group for the screening of a film about living with alopecia. This film uses a blend of documentary and fictionalized memoir to tell the story of Penny, a 20-year-old aspiring filmmaker, who decides to make a film to "come out" about her baldness which she's been hiding with wigs and makeup.
Alopecia is the loss or the absence of hair. Alopecia areata is an autoimmune disease, that causes hair loss and can affect hair all over the body. In simple terms, the immune system, for unknown reasons, attacks the hair root and causes hair loss.
For many, living with this unpredictable disease causes significant emotional stress. The film's documentary subjects share their thoughts about beauty standards and the discrimination they've faced as a result of looking different. Their stories are equal parts illuminating and funny.
